Holly Long

long enough, but he’s going to work on that.

Garner is very competitive and thinks that’s good. When he was little, he had a fear of failure, but he feels he’s grown through that. The competition with Holly for number one was great fun. Now he says simply, “I need to do well.” That’s just who he is.

His family, and especially his dad, have been important influences on Garner. “You have to earn it,” is a familiar phrase from his father. For Garner, a statement by John Paul Jones has made great sense to him: “I can not guarantee success, but I will endeavor to deserve it.”

What would he like to say to the students he’s leaving behind? “Don’t sell yourself short. There’s a lot out there to see.” He urged them not to take school too lightly. In closing he said “the sky’s the limit!” and it was obvious that this young man knew that was true.
