Holly Long and Garner Smythe are competitors and they enjoyed their competition for academic first place in the 2002 graduating class of Rappahannock County High School.
Both will tell you that it mattered to them who won. And both worked hard for that prize. These two young people are graceful and humble in their winning and in their significant achievements.
These conversations with them took place just before they went off to college.
Garner Smythe,
Salutatorian
Garner Smythe was heading for Villanova in Philadelphia the next day, and was he excited? “I can’t wait!” The whole room lit up with his excitement.
The thing he’s most looking forward to is being part of the ROTC “unit” and the camaraderie. Villanova graduates more officers than any other university except for the Naval Academy. Being a part of something was really important to him.
Garner comes from a military family, travelled all over the world, and was in three different high schools in four years. As a result he never got to have any really close friends — until this year. He met his girlfriend here and “she’s the closest friend I’ve ever had.”
Would he have preferred to stay put more often? Not really. He liked the travelling and it gave him the opportunity to develop the skill of making friends quickly. He’s sure that will come in handy soon.
