William H. Whiting of Stephens City, and Don Black of Winchester are joined in an exhibition at Long View Gallery in Sperryville for a show between Aug. 22 and Sept. 18. Their works could scarcely be more different.
Whiting’s pictures are oil on panel, primarily landscapes of open countryside, farmsteads with buildings and animals, and still life and growing flowers. One gay scene shows people enjoying a seaside beach. Only in that picture are people included.
The landscape scenes are likely Virginia places, but their character might suggest Pennsylvania or New York. Whiting’s approach is unmannered and his colors seem natural and realistic. They express contentment.
One especially interesting work, “Sunset Road”, has a strong compositional element combining green, blue and golden-lighted fields blocked off among trees, shrubs, green fields and a blue road.
“Before the Mountain” features a large light blue, shimmering mountain that takes up about a third of the picture. This softly colored scene is a magnet for the eye.
