Labor Day
Labor Day is always the first Monday in
September and is dedicated in honor of the
worker. It is sometimes referred to as the “workingman’s holiday”. The holiday is dedicated to all in honor and appreciation for the work that you do.
The first Labor Day was celebrated on Sept. 5, 1882 in New York City and was started by the Labor Union there.
Starting in 1884, it was moved to the first Monday in September and has since been observed on that day. The U.S. Congress voted it a national holiday on June 28, 1894.
But for lots of us it is viewed as the official end of the summer season.
Children are back in school and vacation season is over.
Many celebrate the weekend with a family gathering, a last picnic or a gathering at a swimming pool before it closes for the season.
Whatever you decide to do and especially if your travels take you to the highway, be extremely careful and remember that long holiday weekends are a peak time for traffic accidents.
Remember to observe speed limits, buckle up and make sure all occupants are wearing a seat belt and don’t drink and drive.
During the 2001 Labor Day holiday weekend six people died in six separate crashes in the state of Virginia. According to the Department of Motor Vehicles those deaths were caused by failure to wear seat belts, alcohol use and speeding.
