The next step
In golf there is a saying that if you want to be better, you should have started sooner. Wrestling is no different. Starting late and playing catch-up is always discouraging.
For our current high school wrestlers there is no choice; but for younger wrestlers — ihere is still no choice. Without a middle school program, our wrestlers are forced to start at a lower level than other schools.
Rappahannock does have some young wrestlers who are starting sooner — by competing with a team in Culpeper. Youth wrestlers such as Conner Miller and Gregory Flournoy are enjoying success, but they ought to be competing for Rappahannock not Culpeper.
With this in mind, the school has approved the start of a middle school program, but with one condition: the school will not purchase a mat. No mat equals no program. With the cost a new mat at $6,000, the possibility of a new program still remains just a possibility. Fund raising is underway but still short of this goal and time is running out.
