She spent most of her childhood and graduated from high school in Magdeburg, in what was then East Germany. She then crossed into West Germany in 1954 and studied medicine in Hamburg, Cologne and finally Munich where she met her husband, Ottmar Dengel, who was studying physics. They married in 1962 in Andernach, Germany, in a ceremony officiated by her father.
In 1965, they emigrated to the United States where she became a pediatrics resident at DC General Hospital and then the Medical Director of the Southwest Health Center in Washington, DC and he worked as a physicist with the US Navy.
After the births of her sons Tobias in 1970 and Florian in 1972, they moved to Front Royal, where she opened a private pediatrics practice on Browntown Road. She tirelessly cared for the health of the children and mothers of Warren County, Rappahannock County and beyond until her office officially closed on Aug. 15, 2002 because of her health.
Surviving are her husband, Dr. Ottmar Hubert Dengel; two sons, Tobias Dengel and his wife, Lynn of Washington, D.C. and Florian Dengel of Markham and his fiancee Lindsey Lawrence of Warrenton; a sister, brother and other relatives.
Memorial services were conducted on Monday, Aug. 26 at Calvary Episcopal Church of Front Royal. She will be laid to rest in Kempten, Germany.
