She concluded that she felt that this was not a good opportunity, and recommended that the Council not “pass this bond issue.”
Mayor Willis then spoke of the importance to the Town’s wastewater treatment and open space preservation that the Avon Hall purchase represented, and he added that a commitment to the purchase had been made to the Avon Hall trustees. The Town Council, in fact, had approved the Avon Hall purchase after a public hearing at their June meeting, so the sole remaining issue on the Avon Hall acquisition is the financing, and not the purchase itself.
Ray Gooch added questions about the financing of Avon Hall with and without an operating and revenue-generating wastewater treatment system, and the Mayor responded that the system will be self-supporting and, if not constructed, the meals and lodging tax will pay for the Avon Hall property.
Expressions of support for the purchase and financing came from Victoria Benson, Barbara Stockton, Wendy Weinberg and Patrick Corbett, and the Council then unanimously approved the interim financing of Avon Hall through SunTrust Bank.
