It has always seemed to me that there are really only two kinds of political messages: those that appeal to the best in people, and those that appeal to the worst in people. I don’t know Mr. Paul Hagstrom, and he may be a fine fellow, but his partisan screed against me in the Rappahannock News seems to me to be the worst kind of appeal.
Mr. Hagstrom accuses me of being like Hillary Rodham Clinton, implying that all Democrats are all the same and bad for America, and that all Republicans are on the right side of things. This is demagogic idiocy compounded to the tenth degree. When I was a member of the Congress, I was considered to be a moderate to conservative Democrat, and I was often rated to the “right” of some Republicans. Tb Mr. Hagstrom, Democrats are a “left wing cadre” and Republicans are “God fearing, patriotic, hard working folks.”
I have thousands of Republican friends, many of whom live right here in Rappahannock. We often have serious and thoughtful discussions about important policy issues, trying to find the best solutions to our nation’s challenges. Many of these folks will vote for me, some will not. But none will take the kind of easy, personal, nasty little cheap shot that Mr. Hagstrom has leveled. For they are good folks who put country ahead of party, and integrity ahead of “winning at any price”.
