There they were — out on our field — the one behind Rappahannock County High School. The first ever RCHS football team at the first ever home game! It was something to see. Based on the size of the crowd it was obvious that many came out to see the first of the first. There wasn’t a parking spot to be had anywhere and that included all the grassy areas next to the school. It was probably the most attended athletic event in the school’s history and the crowd was not disappointed with what they saw.
The field preparation by the athletic director reflected considerable attention to detail. The field, together with the setting afternoon sun and beautiful weather, created a terrific atmosphere for the first home game. The pre-game activity included a performance by the school’s band, introduction of the players from both sides and recognition of those who had helped make this day possible.
After a solemn recognition of the events of Sept. 11, the game commenced.
