the fascinating voice of Abel Jones, a gimpy little Welchman disabled at the first Battle of Bull Run, who serves as a crime solver for the Union Command. His assignments have included solving a murder at Manassas in Faded Coat of Blue, and investigating a massacre of slaves at the Battle of Shiloh, in his third book, Call Each River Jordan. His fourth Abel Jones mystery, Honor’s Kingdom, was published in July and takes his hero to England to investigate rumors that the Confederates are building a great warship there.

The author will discuss and sign his Owen Parry novels on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at the bookshop. Three other writers will discuss their Civil War books on Saturday.

At 11 a.m., Paul Christopher Anderson, who teaches history at Clemson University, will discuss his book, Blood Image: Turner Ashby in the Civil War and the Southern Mind. Colonel Ashby, who commanded the 7th Virginia Cavalry, became a legendary Confederate hero during the first year of the war, especially for his exploits in the Shenandoah Valley in 1862 before he was killed near Harrisonburg.

Anderson’s book examines both Ashby the man and fighter, and the status of hero and martyr that he attained in death.

On Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m., author David Welker will discuss his book, Ibmpest at Ox Hill: The Battle of Chantilly. Published earlier this year, this is the first booklength treatment of the battle on Sept. 1, 1862, in Fairfax County, that may have saved Washington, DC, from being captured by Confederates following their smashing victory at Second Manassas in the days preceding this clash.
