I am very dismayed at the
attacking of Ben Jones as a carpet bagger. Paul Hagstrom’s letter to the Editor, Sept. 12, 2002 starts by saying of Ben Jones, “The best I can tell... Swooping and carpet bagging from state to state...”
“The best I can tell” is a euphemism for I really do not know the facts. The facts are Ben Jones has lived in Rappahannock County for four years and owns and operates a business here. Mr. Jones must be a slow swooper.
The fact is that when Ben Jones was a Georgia congressman he lived in the same house for the first three out of four elections he was involved with. He did not move, he was redistricted just like what has happened here to us. In his last Georgia election he moved in order to run against Newt Gingrich because he believed someone should. (We all remember “Newt.” He managed to shut down the U.S. government, costing the taxpayers billions.)
Mr. Hagstrom wants to keep “Big Washington out of our homes and wallets.” The facts show that under a Democratic administration the country had an unprecedented period of prosperity. The present “spend and borrow” administration has managed to turn a balanced budget with huge surpluses into a $160 billion deficit for the current fiscal year with a projected $1.7 trillion deficit over the next ten years.
