In real life, Ralph Peters of Warrenton is a retired Army lieutenant colonel who writes books on 21st Century issues such as defense policy and terrorism. But in his rich alternative life, Mr. Peters is Owen Parry, the highly acclaimed author of a series of four mystery stories set in the Civil War, narrated by a quirky character named Abel Jones, a Welsh immigrant serving as a sort of private detective in the Union Army.
“Owen Parry” is the pen name Mr. Peters uses as a fiction writer. It will be Owen Parry, rather than Ralph Peters, who appears this coming weekend at Sperryville Civil War Days, where several authors of Civil War books will discuss and sign their works at the Old Sperryville Bookshop on historic Main Street. He will be joined by five other authors of Civil War history, on topics ranging from the Union Irish Brigade and the Battle of Chantilly to Confederate cavalry commander Turner Ashby and General J.E.B. Stuart’s horse artillery.
