Washington, Va. artist Robin Purnell, who is best known for her sincere and emotional paintings of people from around the world, recently spent six months immersed in painting the lovely rolling hills of the Blue Ridge. “I saw the landscape as never before,” says Ms. Purnell. “I never realized there were so many shades of color.”
Ms. Purnell’s exploration of the landscape genre forced her to paint in a different style. She felt the fine brushwork and luminous depth of multiple layers of color in her portrait paintings was not compatible with the spontaneity of the scenes she was observing. She wanted to capture the mood and light at a specific time so she had to sketch quickly, painted loosely, and use different mediums as the scene dictated.
According to Ms. Purnell, “Most of the works are painted with overcast skies and I used linear and atmospheric perspective to create space.” The paintings are in oil, oil pastel and pastel.
Ms. Purnell is excited about sharing her new work with the community, “I hope the audience will enjoy looking at these paintings of our region and feel my sense of awe at the color and harmony of nature.”
Ms. Purnell’s new landscape paintings will be on exhibition in Long View Gallery from Sept. 19 through Oct. 8. There will be a reception . for Ms. Purnell on Saturday, Sept. 28 from 4 to 7 p.m. Everyone is invited.
