The December meeting of the Board of Supervisors brought forward information about volunteer shortfalls and a call for citizens to volunteer for service with the County's seven fire and/or rescue squads. The discussion followed recent meetings between fire and rescue and Board of Supervisors representatives who concluded, according to County Administrator John McCarthy, that "the spirit of volunteerism—especially regarding fire and rescue," is diminishing.
Fire and rescue representatives spoke of the aging of the present group of volunteers, the difficulty in attracting and retaining new volunteers, the cost of paid fire and rescue personnel, and new State legislation that could prove problematic for the County's squads.
