a paid rescue squad member is from $35,000 to $40,000, plus benefits, plus the cost of training time and overtime. Mr. McCarthy added that Madison County recently went to a paid EMT squad, and that the cost of a 2 3/4 man unit was estimated to be $200,000 per year in salary and benefits alone.
Mr. Carter raised the issue of new State rules and regulations regarding emergency medical services. He said that in January of 2003 that any unit with fewer than eight providers will lose its license to operate; any unit with eight to eleven providers will have to schedule its members to show specific coverage on a 24 hour, 7 day per week basis; but any emit with twelve providers or more will not have to make any changes. Two or three companies in the County could be in danger of losing their licenses, he added.
Mr. McCarthy suggested that this be a continuing item on the Board of Supervisors agenda for the next few months. He also agreed to permit his office to be used as a point of contact for citizens who wish to inquire about fire and rescue volunteering in any area of the County.
