the earlier one at 11 was because we were actually facing into the meteor storm. That sounded a bit scary' and, not being as up on cosmology as I am on biological science, I did a bit of research to see just how we could be facing into this fusillade of meteors and not be affected by them.

According to the Aerospace Corporation's Web site twww.aero.org), the meteor shower was visible because Earth was passing through the dust trail left by the comet Tempel-Tuttle. The largest of the dust particles are actually no bigger than the smallest sand particles on a beach, and their small size keeps them from getting very far into the Earth’s atmosphere. When these particles hit the Earth’s atmosphere at such high velocities ( about 43 miles per second), they create a ball of high-energy plasma that is about one yard across. As the particle disintegrates, the plasma dissipates until nothing remains.
