Bushmen Mirage is one of the most unusual photographs in the exhibit. The midday heat rippling off the Kalahari Desert floor elongates the distant figures of hunting Bushmen. The effect is reminiscent of a scene from Lawrence of Arabia, and indeed, Johns had that image in mind when he conceived of this shot.
He explains how he got the photo, "It was about 10:30 in the morning and already the temperature in the desert was about 110 degrees. I saw the figures in the distance, threw down a sand bag to steady my camera and lay on the ground to get the low point of view. I used a 600 mm lens with a 2x
