What we re seeing down here on earth as a streak in the sky is the plasma ball. The tiny particles actually all bum up at very high altitudes and don’t reach the surface of the earth, or even to airplane altitudes. Although satellites may be affected by this dust storm, we on the surface of earth just get the magnificent show — made more so here in Rappahannock because of our dark skies. Our suburban neighbors, with their flood of artificial lighting, weren’t so lucky.
