Each year about fourteen percent of Americans aged 18 or older experience the death of a parent, spouse, sibling or child. Studies show that such losses disrupt life patterns for up to three years. In recognition of this profound effect, Emily Post reported in 1927 that a widow’s formal mourning period was three years. Since then, however, institutions have given less recognition to the bereavement role.
