Time to increase the tax on cigarettes
With the state strapped for funds, the new Virginia General Assembly that convenes in January should take a serious look at increasing the state’s cigarette tax, which is the lowest in the nation. Del. Gary Reese (R-Dulles) says that increasing the current tax of 2.5 cents per pack by a nickel would raise $400 million that could be split to fund education and transportation. It would be much better to raise the tax by 10 cents.
