Ihe sand, in addition to creating a loamier soil out of clay, is high in silica, which influences the flavor and storage quality of crops. Harvesting is easier. Adding fresh manure or high nitrogen fertilizer is a mistake, which will produce forked, hairy or woody roots. Straw mulch is a good idea to cool the soil and retain moisture. Watering deeply and regularly (once weekly in dry weather) is necessary to avoid bitter, fibrous roots — they must not dry out in the growing process. Another tip is to grow the vegetables in blocks, meaning one short row behind another, to form a solid square. The densely planted top foliage will also promote moisture conservation and cool soil temperatures, even in drought or for summer-sown fall crops.
Direct seeding is the method for most roots, though I have transplanted my own starts of celeriac and beets. The trick with direct seeding is to sow the seed, cover lightly with soil and immediately lay a shade cloth or lightweight row cover directly over the planted area.
