It went by too fast! How could such a highly anticipated holiday, with its longed for memories of warm evenings, good food, long talks with far-flung relatives, disappear into a blur of indigestion, crowded shopping malls, and gift decisionmaking?
I'm having this sinking feeling that my memories of this holiday are only those that have been concocted by the makers of commercials for TV. You know the ones: a motherly-type person cooking all day, while small children play outside in the leaves. No toys, no Game Boys. Just leaves. Relatives stream in the door actually bringing food. Candles lit, music in the background. An ironed tablecloth (without cat hair) on the dining room table. No one circling ads in the papers for the early-bird sales. Hey, a girl can dream, right? Well, my holiday would have made Martha wince, but we loved the quiet and the dinner. (Who needs stuffing, anyway?)
I hope that yours was as you envisioned, also.
• The Boys Varsity basketball team played against Rappahannock High School Saturday morning for a lively scrimmage. It’s always fun to get together with the Panthers; thanks, guys!
