Now is the best time to start cold weather birdfeeding. When the cold weather arrives, the calorie requirements for birds increase. At the same time, food is harder to find. Birds will flock to your feeders knowing there is a convenient meal waiting for them.
Place the birdfeeders nearby where you and the children can watch them and enjoy seeing the different species. Place your feeders is an area sheltered from the wind. Mount from poles or on wires from limbs at about five to six feet from ground level.
Feeders can be a simple shelf feeder such as a platform mounted on a post. The disadvantage to this type of feeder is that the birdseed easily gets wet and moldy. There is alpo more waste of food since the birdseed scatters easily in this type of feeder.
