The message from residents along Bear Wallow road is pretty clear. They’re not happy about the prospect of a school being located there and dozens of signs let everyone know that.
The Mountain Laurel Montessori School at Belle Meade is applying for a special use permit for what school administrator Elaine Glier described as “a very small scale farm school” for up to 25 students aged twelve to fifteen.
They currently have an option to purchase a 35-acre site. Approval of the permit would clear the way for Mountain Laurel to purchase the land and building up at the very end of Bear Wallow road.
Residents living on Bear Wallow and Dearing Roads have organized a campaign against the planned school, and have posted numerous signs along the route to the site expressing their opposition.
Mountain Laurel has operated a Montessori school in Front Royal since 1989 for preschool through 6th grade. They opened their farm school at Belle Meade in the fall of 2004, and now want to move to the Bear Wallow location because they would rather own than rent the property and because they feel the location and facilities better serve their needs.
