The great thing about the end of the regular varsity basketball season is that every team has a new opportunity to dismiss past misfortunes.
Rappahannock County head varsity boys basketball coach Bob Czekaj holds those hopes as his Panthers move into the Group A Bull Run District tournament.
“The season starts next week. That’s when it counts,” said Czekaj, whose Panthers are 0-19 overall this season. “You lose, you’re out. I want to win a game. I don’t care when it is.”
Because the regular season did not conclude until Wednesday night, the district athletic directors could not determine the tournament seedings until after press time. . But Czekaj believes that Rappahannock most likely will face Strasburg in the opening round of the tournament Tuesday night in Strasburg. During the regular season, Strasburg bested the Panthers, 61-18, and 50-30.
That 20-point defeat also came at Strasburg, where the Rams just led, 22-15, at intermission. “We play better on the road than we do at home,” Czekaj said. “Don’t ask me why. I don’t know.”
