Luray, the Panthers looked as if they would make the Bulldogs work for a win. Luray led, 8-7, early in the second quarter.
Three straight times Rappahannock had the ball with a chance to score and take the lead but could not.
Later in the second quarter, Luray held a 15-7 lead. Knowing that the game’s outcome could be in question, Czekaj called a timeout and told his Panthers that it was “critical” that they went down the court and set up for a good shot.
Rappahannock, however, became impatient and took a poor shot at the basket. Luray closed the first half with a 2411 lead.
Still, despite the offensive struggles, Czekaj said that strange things can happen in district tournaments.
Sure, everyone looks at the tournament champion as most likely being either Clarke County or George Mason. Those schools are the top two in the district. But upsets can occur.
Can Rappahannock stage an upset in the tournament? “All we have to do is believe. We’ve got to play our game, run our offense,” Czekaj said. “I know that they can do it. They do it in practice. You play to win or what’s the point in playing at all.”
