REMEMBRANCE
Mourning jewelry once took the form of plain gold or gold enameled rings with a black or white skeleton, skull and crossbones, coffin, and/or hourglass motifs. The date of death and the initials of the deceased were engraved inside. Bequeathing jewelry owned by the deceased can be traced back to the Middle Ages. By the seventeenth century, as increasing numbers of mourners requested a remembrance, it became quite common for the deceased to leave instructions in his or her will for a number of identical rings to be made specifically for presentation, with costs charged to the estate. Each ring bore the name of the deceased and the date of death, sometimes adding the birth date and a suitable sentiment.
