This past Saturday, the Rappahannock County High School academic team traveled to Clarke County High School for a hard-fought series of matches against their Bull Run District rivals.
Finishing the regular season at 7-5 in district competition, the team was third going into Saturday’s match ups, and the Panthers ended up in third place at the end of the afternoon. The matches were fastpaced with extremely challenging questions, heavily drawn from world history, geography, arts and literature, and pop culture.
After a bye in the first round, the Panthers took on second place Clarke in a carbon-copy of their last meeting. Behind by 45 points after the first toss-up round, Rappahannock pulled into the lead after the directed round, and the score was 95-70. Clarke then came from behind and won by 140-105. Nevertheless, we still had our hopes that we could beat them in the second round of double elimination, especially since most of Clarke’s points came from a single player.
In the next match, Rappahannock handily dispatched Manassas Park 190-85, never allowing the Cougars to get the lead. In the toss-up rounds, where individuals have to answer questions, freshman A.J. Collins scored 60 points, junior Clay Vickers scored 50, and Eddie Taylor, a senior, scored
