A backache is a hateful thing. I think because it is so centrally located and all the nerves radiate to just about every other place in the body, you just kind of hurt all over.
Technically, the x-rays this time around show significant deterioration in the discs surrounding the L5 vertebrae, resulting in that last chunk of backbone, just above the tailbone, sitting in there at a rather cockeyed angle, and, I suppose, bumping into a bunch of stuff it shouldn’t.
When you see that on the film, you wonder how in the world that thing is ever going to get straightened up without going in there with some liquid nails or some such to prop it back in the right position. The options are not all that great, and it can get you down, a bit.
And that’s another thing, I’m pretty sure chronic backaches can cause depression, and if that isn’t adding insult to injury, I don’t know what is.
In the meantime, there won’t be any stories from this quarter about climbing Rappahannock Peak, or wrasslin’ with big ol’ bears, and the like. Going to be doing a lot of reading and sitting on the ice pack, and, unfortunately, eating too much. But, hey, there has got to be a bright side to this thing somewhere.
