The Middle Street Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of an exhibition of recent paintings by Steven Kenny.
The title of this show, Flying Lessons, loosely refers to the bird imagery that unites all the works on view. Kenny is fascinated by how thoroughly birds as subjects have always shared a rich visual, psychological, and spiritual relationship with their human counterparts. A wealth of avian symbolism stretches back throughout human history and has become interwoven in every level of our lives including literature, religion, language, fashion, mythology and, of course, art.
As Kenny’s work has progressed over time, bird imagery has appeared more frequently and become a great source for artistic and personal inspiration. For the artist, these winged creatures have come to symbolize many aspects of the human condition. Their possible interpretation as symbols of transcendence, the soul, spirit, imagination, freedom, and messengers provides an abundant visual language to draw upon and utilize. By skillfully combining the human figure with bird imagery in a painting style reminiscent of the Old Masters, Kenny gives
