When you’re expecting a child, you start planning. It’s like planning for a trip to a new place. There’s the baby’s room and new clothes, books on parenting and a fancy stroller. You ponder names and think about how your life is going to change and what you will see in this new place. You prepare yourself as best you can for the responsibilities of raising a child, educating them, going on vacations and standing on the soccer sidelines.
Then, instead of a healthy birth, a child with special needs arrives and your planned trip to blissful parenthood turns into a world that you know nothing about and are ill-prepared to handle. Shelly and Greg Dodson went on this trip several years ago. They are still traveling and the road map doesn’t seem to get any easier to read. To meet them is to meet two very sincere and energetic parents that are totally devoted to their daughter. It would be unrealistic to say that they aren’t bitter or angry or on the verge of screaming their lungs out but they’ve been handed a jewel in their daughter and they both know that. It is because of that knowledge that their mission is so focused and that they are such beautiful advocates for Sidney. There’s a fundraiser on April 1. Come.
