Even UPS had nothing on folks back then: both of the bus lines offered freight service in addi* tion to their passenger connections. Tbday, there are only two ways ‘outta here for most folks: 1) The ultimate of personal transport flexibility and luxury: the horseless carriage or 2) fancy or not so fancy footwork (emphasis on work). But at $2.50/gal., the powered option could change dramatically at any time by unintended consequences from a pre-emptive strike gone bad or one or more well-calculated strategic interruptions in the oil production infrastructure half a world away. The old “Pneumatic tires’ and steel rails combo might start to look downright prescient at say, $10/gal.
But for the present, we pan all get to “Morrow” anytime we like, night or day. But whatever the conveyance, car, train, plane, ox-cart, rickshaw, mule-team, or (shudder) foot, can we ever solve the ultimate dilemma Bob Gibson poses about our journey: “Can you get anywhere tomorrow and get back again today?” While sorting this out, happy trails to you!
