Senior Alex Sharp returns to play second base. His double play partner is freshman Chase Tupper. Sophomore Travis Jenkins can play first or third. Russell, who is coming off of an ankle injury, also plays first and pitches. Juniors Chris Anderson and Steven Butler make the jump from the junior varsity team. Anderson can play second or third. Butler will see playing time at third.
The outfield will include junior Bobby Czekaj, Nathan Hartshorn, Shane Tucker and Eric Montague. Miller’s knee injury cost Rappahannock a potential starting outfielder, but Jeff Jenkins also can put Russell in the outfield when his ankle heals completely.
While flexibility is important to the Panthers, so is get'ting on base and making their team speed work to produce runs.
“Speed is one thing that you don’t have to team, and we’ve got a lot speed with this team,” Jeff Jenkins said. “Speed can make a difference in a game.”
Once the Panthers reach base, they still need to hit the ball to bring in runs. That will happen, Jeff Jenkins said.
“Right now, we’re putting the ball in play,” he added. “But the ball is just dribbling around a bit. But this team is going to hit.”
