They needed a demonstration seat that would protect a passenger in case of a crash. The system must sense if a passenger was indeed in the particular seat, deploy front and side airbags at the command from the pilot’s seat, and could then be retracted by a second signal after the plane came to a halt. Warning lights must also be employed. The team did not have one leader since it took all three young men working steadily to arrive at a satisfactory solution for the judges.

“This problem was much harder than last year, but we got it right,” said Kev Martin. Larry Oliver added, “The programming could not even begin until we decided how to model the airbags.”
