Argentina and Uruguay are
currently embroiled in an ugly environmental conflict over Uruguay’s construction of two wood pulp processing plants which would dump treated waste into the Uruguay River, which flows into Argentina. There, the situation is unresolved, and huge blockades and massive protests continue as the two countries try to work out a diplomatic solution.

On March 28, the Department of Environmental Quality will hold a public hearing on Washington’s application for a permit that would allow the town to dispose of up to 60,000 gallons of treated wastewater into the Rush River. ' Washington’s disposal plans are opposed by a group of county residents called the Friends of the Rush, composed of people who live along the Rush downstream of Washington, but not in town, and other concerned county residents.
