Paul Stevenson’s proposal to convert the Sperryville Antique Market into a condominium complex hit a wall of criticism Aug. 15 before the Rappahannock County Planning Commission.
Stevenson withdrew his application to convert the 30,000-square-foot building into 24 condo units just as the commissioners were voting to table it due to what they considered to be a lack of information about the project.
While the commissioners were compiling a laundry list of questions and requirements for an application they would consider, Stevenson interrupted them to say he wanted to pull his proposal from consideration.
After the meeting, Stevenson said he needed to “regroup” and decide what direction he wants to take next.
He said the environmental impact statement, site plan, water-availability tests, fire-safety study and other requirements the commission was asking for would ruin the feasibility of the project.
“We plan to pursue another permitted use on the property,” Stevenson said, indicating that he was leaning toward another permitted commercial use, such as retail and office spaces.
