has been training on his bike this summer to get in shape for the cross-country season.

“Every sport I play kind of conditions me for the next,” he said.

Boelte is another multisport athlete and has been running cross country since he was a freshman.

“I got into it just trying to stay in shape for basketball and soccer,” Boelte said.

His best time last year was 19 minutes, 20 seconds. He’d like to get that under 19 minutes this season.

“It’s all about effort,” he said. “That’s pretty much all the sport is.”

That resolve was exemplified by the entire team on a recent hot, humid day, when Gillis gave the runners the option of taking an abbreviated run during practice. None of them took him up on the offer.

“These kids never quit; they have a lot of heart,” the coach said. “It’s a defining characteristic of Rappahannockers and it’s clear in this team.”
