re-establishing lines from the Capitol, the White House, and various avenues, a point for the original foundation of the Jefferson Stone was determined. After digging down six and a half feet the foundation of the original marker was found and a new foundation created on top of it to bring the base up close to ground level.
A new monument, with an inscription, was ordered. The new southern marker was set in place on December 18,1889. Unfortunately, one line of the inscription had to be crudely chiseled out. The missing line read “being the centre point of the” and was tied to the line underneath: “District of Columbia.” The Jefferson Stone did not mark the center of Washington, D.C.
This is the Jefferson Stone you see today on the Mall (Figure 2).
A year later, a new northern marker, facing south, was placed flat with the grass in the middle of the Ellipse, south of the White House, with the following engraved on it: “Meridian Stone 1890.” Figure 3 shows how everything lines up north and south today.
