Aug. 25: CPR training
Chris Payne of the Sperryvifte Volunteer Rescue Squad (SVRS) led a training of SVRS members in CPR (cardio-pulmonary resuscitation) at the SVRS building this past Saturday. This is a basic skill that can be learned by anyone. By using CPR, you as a bystander may be able to help save a loved one or friend or anyone else who collapses in your vicinity due to a heart attack or cardiac arrest. For example, the chart in the CPR class manual (by American Heart Association) shows how important it is to start CPR as soon as posable when a person collapses. The survival rate is approximately 55% if the CPR is started within a minute of collapse, compared to only about 25% if started after 5 minutes and only 10% after 10 minutes. What this means is that "bystander CPR" started immediately after someone collapses, without waiting tor an EMS unit to arrive, can greatly improve the probability of their survival. Of course 911 should be called as soon as someone collapses, so that EMS help is on the way. And the EMS unit will have automatic defibrillator equipment (AED) which is used in conjunction with CPR and may further improve survival chances. But the key is to start of CPR early. Chris Payne will be leading a second class this Saturday from 8:30 am. to 5 p.m. There is one slot available to the public free of charge. Contact Judy Reidinger at 987-9600. If there is enough interest, SVRS may schedule future classes.
