English at Rappahannock High School. Valerie is praised by Lucky and Eileen for her unfailing smile to all customers and for her loyalty as an employee, never late and never calling in sick! If any business needs a good person, be sure to come to see Valerie before the bakery closes. She lives in Sperryville and we want to keep her here!

And then, among the Apple Hill cast of characters, there is Teddy Fellegatta! An avowed early bird, Lucky says that Ted is there to motivate them, make them laugh and give them energy. He often cooks at the bakery and treats us to his Italian special meals. Best known for his photography, his other passion is cooking and Ted has dreamed of running the bakery for an investor!

One reason that we are losing this couple is because of the lack of affordable housing, an issue of great concern and study right now in the county. Lucky and Eileen have purchased a home in Clayton, NC. For an affordable $189,000 they have a 2500 sq. ft. new home with a two-car garage. It is outside of Raleigh, offering Lucky the chance to complete his Master’s degree at one of three universities and employment opportunities for both of them. Another reason for the change in career is to have work with hours that are more conducive to family life, with hopes for a baby in the future!

Efforts have been made to sell the business to keep the bakery with us, but that has not happened. We thank Eileen and Lucky and the Wallers for all they have done. While we have enjoyed their food, we have also appreciated the warm atmosphere they have created and the opportunity to just sit and chat with each other. Eileen and Lucky, you will be sorely missed! Good luck in North Carolina and we look forward to hearing stories of the new chapter in your lives when you come home to Rappahannock for visits!
