It’s that time of the year again. It comes only once a year, and no, it’s not Christmas. And come Monday morning, a groan will be heard throughout Rappahannock County.
Monday, August 27 is the first day of school.
The first day is possibly the most stressful day of the year for students all over the world. Some students must adjust to a new school, or even county, and all students receive a brand new group of teachers and classmates.
I know. I have attended six different schools, including Rappahannock County High School, in two different states and four different counties.
While students may be forced to rise earlier than usual to catch the bus on Monday, another group of anxious individuals will walk out to their cars, carrying last minute supplies, grade books, red pens, arid lesson plans.
The teachers, faculty, and staff, God help them, will turn their key in the ignition and drive away, to face what could be 180 days of pure madness.
Well, that’s looking at the down side.
On the first day, every •teacher is optimistic.
Or at least they should fake it.
But what makes the first day a success?
Well, a good night’s sleep and breakfast help, but it is obvious that other things are needed for a great first day.
