According to Tibetan Buddhist tradition, the personality of the deceased goes into a four-day trance as soon as the body perishes. During this time, the dead do not realize they are deceased. As monks chant in an attempt to reach the dead, the deceased see a brilliant light. If they are not terrified by the Clear Light, they will welcome it and not be reborn. However, most flee from the light, which then fades. Next, the deceased become conscious of the fact that they are dead. As their life's actions and events pass before them, they seek to be bom again. All previous thoughts and actions direct them to choose new parents, who will provide them with their next bodies.
