in several years that the girls fielded a full squad for districts.
The girls placed fifth in the Bull Run last season. BoothEnoch qualified individually for regionals after placing in the top 15 at the district meet.
Gillis expects captains Will Boelte, a senior, and junior Zackariah Wayland to lead the teams this season. Sophomore Reed Dove and seniors Andrew Lee and Ben Pendleton are also shaping up to be top performers for the boys, Gillis said.
On the girls side, Gillis said the top runners will likely be juniors Sarah Smoot and Stephanie Sine, sophomore Carly Day and freshmen Brittani Dodson and Sarah Wheatley.
Boelte and Wayland said the Panthers have a somewhat different style than they did in 2006.
“We’re a little bit more laid back this year,” Wayland said. “But come race day, we’re totally serious.”
The Panthers are running as a team more than individuals, Boelte said.
Wayland has run cross country since eighth grade. His best time last season was 21 minutes, 24 seconds for a 5kilometer course. He wants to get that time under 20 minutes this season.
