A birthday wish to an
“Invisible Hero”
A woman we know is one of many SperryviUe grandmothers whose total dependability and untiring devotion to family are the bedrock of this community. Listen to why I think she is one of our many “invisible heroes". At age 5, LeeAnna Whorton was moved out of Shenandoah National Park with her parents into the little house, now covered with overgrowth, on what is now called Pearl Lane at Route 211. LeeAnna still talks of the plant with the yellow flowers that bloomed at her family’s original homestead and a few years ago her daughter Lisa went and brought out a cutting of another favorite bush with salmon colored flowers to transplant for her mother to enjoy. LeeAnna has two children, Albert Whorton and Lisa Dodson, neighbors on Pearl Lane, and living just one hollow over from Mamma. Grandson Gary Whorton, soon to be married, is building his home right next to his parents and close to grandma, too.
For 31 years and eight months LeeAnna traveled over the mountain in all kinds of weather to Luray to work in the Wrangler factory to support her family. She is proud that she seldom missed work! When she retired, she took over day care of her granddaughters, first Amber (now 11) and then Courtney Dodson, thus enabling her daughter Lisa to work knowing that the girls were safe at home. Even now, with the youngest just entering first grade, LeeAnna faithfully picks the girls up at the bus stop every day.
LeeAnna will never get a “medal” for her devotion to family, and there won’t be a monument erected as for our military to commemorate her teaching these girls their ABC's, to count and for all the piles of laundry she did. However, she has launched this next generation of children with Amber wanting to be a veterinarian and Courtney... well, she’s too young to say. But if both these girls are like grandma, theyll do just fine. So Happy Birthday. LeeAnna.. .you are one special lady!
Prayers needed
Julie Portman, founder of Ki Theatre, had unexpected surgery while visiting her brother in California. She will return home to Rappahannock in September. In the meantime, please send her all your prayers, thoughts and light.
