still a bit odd
Not many people know what to make of the Jefferson Stone today. It sits near the Washington Monument, has no explanatory sign, and still has an odd feature about it. Although the pin at the top forms a true north-south line with the middle of the White House, the groove in the top of the Jefferson Stone, which one assumes would also be northsouth, is not. In addition, it looks like someone tried to straighten the groove out by chiseling it. The reason things are not lined up is that the Jefferson Stone itself is not squared away to true northsouth and east-west (Figure 4).
In a way, it is comforting to know that a meridian marker from the days of Thomas Jefferson has been slightly off since the very beginning. First, in 1804, when it should have been located 2.23 feet north of its present position, and now, with the replacement stone
