Rappahannock County High School’s cross-country runners are going to have an opportunity to fill some pretty big shoes this fall.
The boys team lost its top three runners from last season - Josh Makela, Alex Ramey and Juan Tisera - to graduation. ^Vnd Savanna BoothEnoch, who was named the girls team’s most valuable runner as a freshman in 2006, has transferred to another school.
But third-year head coach Dave Gillis still has high hopes for the upcoming season. He has given both the boys and girls an ambitious goal: Reach the Group A State Finals.
The teams began official practice Aug. 1 and Gillis expects to have a combined total of 25 to 30 runners for the boys and girls teams.
Last season, the boys finished third at the Bull Run District Meet, and continued on to the Group B Region Meet. The top four teams from each district qualify for regionals.
Makela and Ramey finished among the top 15 runners in the regional meet, thus qualifying them individually to run in the state finals.
