After giving those high energy boys pancakes and hot chocolate for breakfast, we usually spent a good three hours or more on the beach, kayaking to a rocky coastal area where we would feast our eyes on deep purple starfish, sixteen pointed sunflower starfish, bat starfish, orange anemone and Dungeness and Red Rock crab6. The untiring beach combing exploration of every rock that the boys (or we) could overturn yielded beach crabs, the ancient chitons, hermit crabs and so much more. Hours were spent by the boys creating forts from driftwood and habitats for their crabs and other sea creatures. Ray experimented for hours with his camera. When not pressed into service by Joe and Skyler, I contented myself with supervision of the boys and searching for agates on the beach, which I found!
Wednesday through Saturday are Dungeness days! We loaded three huge baited crab pots into the row boats and dropped them in what we hoped were great spots in Padilla Bay. Sure enough, we hauled in seven Dungeness Crabs, about 7-8 inches in diameter across the shell, cooked them and ate them for dinner! We were all thrilled. Our son and daughter-in-law joined us from Friday night through Sunday and brought a motor boat that enabled us to explore a bit farther than we could go with Kayaks and row boats. Kevin works for Nature Conservancy and is devoted to the life in the Northwest. Also a good cook, he grilled a wild salmon for us one night.
Perfect for hanging out for ten days with two active little boys. Will we return next year? It is a unanimous “Yes!” by all. What a lovely way to keep building the ties with these little boys, our son and daughter-in
