The “Meridian Stone,” the northern marker? When 16th Street was extended and Meridian Hill cut down at the start of August 1872, the “Meridian Stone” went out with the debris. It was later recovered, but someone reshaped it for use as a hitching post out on Bladensburg Road. It then disappeared. In 1923, a plaque was placed on 16th Street at the main entry to Meridian Hill Park, describing the purpose and original position of the Meridiem Stone.
The “Capitol Stone,” the southern marker? Bedini notes, “The marker was finally removed at some time after 1889 during further grading operations in preparation of the grounds before opening the Monument to the public.”
