An elaborate plan to steal an automated teller machine left a path of destruction Saturday morning in Amissville.

A pickup truck stolen from Settle’s Cars and Trucks was used to break down the front entrance of nearby Mayhugh’s Store on U.S. 211. The perpetrators then loaded the stores ATM onto the truck and drove the vehicle about two miles east to Holly Springs Road, where they used it to break open the cash machine. Finally, the interior of the truck was set on fire.

Rappahannock County Sheriff Larry Sherertz said his office received a call from Mayhugh’s security company at 1:23 a.m. Saturday to report that
