from Manassas around 10:30 p.m. on July 17 and was present at gun sales in Prince William County.
Lt. Smith said the defendant also told her that she, Lewis and Jensen went to New Market on July 18 so Lewis could bury some of the stolen guns.
The lieutenant testified that the defendant was caught in Tennessee in September. Lt. Smith said she believes the defendant was attempting to elude capture.
Ken Carter, who has owned Trading Post since 1994, also testified Tuesday. Carter said he closed his shop the evening of July 17 and returned the morning of July 20 to find some 40 handguns, valued at nearly $17,000, missing from the store.
He said the person or persons responsible for the crime seemed to have entered the building through a roof vent on the east side of the building. His b uilding did not have video surveillance during the time of the incident.
After court was adjourned, Lt. Smith said Lewis will be charged in Rappahannock after other counties and federal authorities finish processing him. He is being held on firearm charges at the Fauquier County Jail.
“As long as we don’t have to worry about him getting out, we can charge him later,” she said. “But he will be charged.”
The lieutenant said charges against Jensen are pending.
